そう、Crookersである。そう聞いて、君はこう思ったかもしれない――「Crookersといえば、大規模フェスや大物リミックスでしょ？」と。確かにそれは事実である。しかし、それだけではない。
彼らを一躍有名にしたKid Cudiの「Day’N’Nite」のリミックスは、Phraの寝室で制作されたものであり、それは彼のルーツに深く根ざしている。つまり、一方ではヒップホップの伝統的なトレーニング――スクラッチやターンテーブリズム――を受けながら、同時に音楽をプレイすることへの純粋な情熱を持っていたのがPhraである。
Phraはアルプスの小さな村で育ち、未成年の頃から地元のクラブでDJをしていた。その頃、彼はイタリアのベテランDJたちから、時代を超えるハウスミュージックへの情熱と技術を学んだ。Phraは何よりもまず「本物のDJ」であり、膨大なレコードコレクションと、ダンスフロアとクラブカルチャーへの深い愛情を持っている。
だからこそ、彼のすべてのリリースは常に限界を押し広げ、創造性を最優先にしてきた。2010年のデビューアルバム「Tons Of Friends」においてもそれは明らかであり、ジャンルの壁を打ち破った「Dr Gonzo」ではさらに顕著であった。そして、2014年のアルバム「Sixteen Chapel」でもそれは確実であり、Jeremihをフィーチャーした「I Just Can’t」は、オーストラリアRIAAチャートで数週間にわたって1位を獲得した。
その後、Phraは原点であるハウスミュージックへと回帰する。彼はそれをスタイルを持って実行し、伝説的レーベル〈Defected Records〉と手を組んだ。2015年にはWillsをフィーチャーした「Withdrawals」を発表し、2016年にはKym Gazelleを迎えた「A Place In My Heart」、Mike Cityとの共作「Get My Mind Right」をリリース。そして2017年にはホワイトレーベルのアナログ盤「CRKRS 001」を発表し、「Innocent」を含む4曲を収録した。
これらの楽曲はBBC Radio 1をはじめとする有力DJやラジオ局から次々と支持を集め、新たな方向性がすぐに理解され、歓迎された。
当然、彼のDJセットもその進化に伴い、予測不能な選曲とミキシングで観客を魅了し続けている。20年以上にわたり続けてきたこのスタイルは、今なお深化を続けており、彼は進化し続けているのである。

We know what you’re thinking: Crookers, big festivals, big remixes…well, yes, butnot only.The famous Day’N’Nite remix that made them a household name was produced in Phra’s bedroomand was direct consequence of his upbringing: on one hand a traditional hip hop training, scrat-ching and turntablism et all, and a passion for playing music.That’s Phra, who grew up in a little village in the Alps, and used to dj in the local clubs when hewas still underage learning the trade from experienced Italian djs, that transferred to him their pas-sion for timeless house music.
