LAO, also known as Lauro Robles, is a key figure in experimental and club-oriented electronic music with deep roots in Latin American rhythm and cultural context. His work merges regional rhythmic traditions with forward-thinking club structures, developing a sonic language that moves between the physical, the experimental, and the ritual.
A producer, DJ, and co-founder of the influential NAAFI collective, LAO has built a career that consistently crosses genre boundaries and disciplinary lines. To date, he has released over 15 records including singles, EPs, and albums, with notable works such as Amen EP(2006), Catedral EP (2014), Perfil EP (2017), Coastal Acid (2024) and the critically recognized album Chapultepec (2024).
His music has been presented at major international festivals including Unsound, Sónar Barcelona, Sónar México, Ceremonia, Vive Latino, Red Bull Music Academy, MUTEK Montréal, and MUTEK México, as well as at iconic venues worldwide such as Panorama Bar (Berlin), Razzmatazz (Barcelona), Circus (Tokyo), and Oil Club (Shenzhen).
Throughout his career, LAO has collaborated with a wide range of artists across experimental, club, and pop-adjacent scenes, including Gaika, Linn Da Quebrada, Robot95, Pearson Sound, Kamixlo, Nick León, Cid Rim, Simo Cell, Nick Hook, Eartheater, Noa Sainz, and MJ Nebreda, reinforcing a collaborative practice that bridges club culture, experimental pop, and sound art.
Expanding his practice beyond traditional music formats, LAO has developed multidisciplinary projects such as the experimental opera Atlacoya: The Sad Water of Lake Texcoco, presented in 2023 as part of the TONO art and performance festival in Mexico City, where he led both the conceptual development and sound design. This work later evolved into the musical direction of La Culebra, presented within the closing program of the 2024 Venice Biennale of Art.
In parallel with his artistic practice, LAO has worked in sound design and music production for international brands including Corona, Victoria, Don Julio, and Herdez,
integrating sound, cultural identity, and contemporary narrative. Based in Mexico City, he continues to develop projects that expand the boundaries of Latin American electronic music while remaining deeply connected to the global underground.
